Volunteer with National Youth Advocacy Service - Could you befriend and support a child in care?

Could you befriend and support a child in care? Would you like to make a difference to a young person’s life?

We’re looking for volunteers of all ages and from all walks of like to be part of our Herefordshire Independent Visiting service.

As a volunteer Independent Visitor (IV), you will become a reliable and consistent point of contact for a child in care who has limited or no family contact.

IV's visit their matched child or young person either at home, or somewhere agreed, on a regular basis and enjoy an activity together such as; (bowling, football, park, or rock climbing).

IV's are matched with children and young people who have little or no contact with their birth families, or if a social worker thinks they would benefit from having an IV in some way.

Often Independent Visitors are the only person in a child or young person’s life that is not paid to be there.

Making a positive difference to the life of a child or young person is an amazing feeling, but by volunteering as an Independent Visitor you'll also:

  • make new friends and create unforgettable happy, fun experiences
  • attend training and regular support meetings with your volunteer IV Coordinator
  • have all of your expenses covered
  • be able to easily fit your volunteering around your other commitments
  • All expenses are reimbursed

We are looking in particular for male IV’s, but also need female ones, to take young people out who enjoy doing new things, interested in sports, playing basketball and cycling and is also happy with taking a dog for a walk. All sorts of different activities but at the moment for lockdown most of the visits are virtual – such as playing online board games, doing quizzes, both baking a cake and comparing them,  watching a football match and chatting about it.

If you are able to spare a few hours once a month for a minimum of 2 years, and you can empathise and be supportive it could be the role for you.

We are looking for adult volunteers of all ages who are caring, passionate and interested in supporting children and young people. Full training is provided so you can understand more about what you would be expected to do and what you can expect from us.
