New Release Coming!

hvoss is pleased to announce that we will soon be releasing an exciting new book and hope to organise a launch this summer, when restrictions allow. ‘Baking a difference’ is a historical record of a very different year and way of working for the BBO Herefordshire project, with very honest and moving personal lockdown stories matched with practical fun baking recipes. It is a celebration of all we have overcome.

'This book really captures the passion and enthusiasm of everyone taking part - awe-inspiring personal stories and lovely bakes - a winner!' Suzanne Penny- hvoss Trustee

Online baking became a hit with our groups over lockdown. Many people hadn’t baked before and several of our participants are blind, so there were a range of IT and technical problems to deal with before we got started. Once resolved however, we had regular baking days each week and learnt together, with participants taking it in turns to lead the sessions as they grew in confidence. Their enthusiasm even turned into a 12 hour fundraising Bake Off last November, after which everyone wanted the recipes, so the BBO baking book was born. This medium however, is about much more than recipes and baking, it has provided social contact and promoted social inclusion, tackling isolation and supporting people with mental ill health. People made friends, had fun and learnt valuable life skills, especially for those alone and shielding.

Baking was making a difference to people’s lives.

‘BBO has given me something to look forward to, with the baking workshops especially. It gives me contact and communication with others and a routine for the week. I would have gone crazy without it over the last 3 months living alone. Baking relaxes me, I switch off from what is going on and my worries. I have to concentrate on what I am doing, shop and prepare for it. I really enjoy it.  Less time to stress. Other services have closed that I thought would support me or just haven’t been in contact. I don’t know what I would have done without hvoss.’ – Rose.

As the months went on it became clear that everyone had a unique story to tell and we thought it important to record these. We therefore interviewed people we had worked closely with and decided to incorporate their stories with their bakes into this book. These interviews gave people a voice and in their own words highlight the challenges and barriers they faced, reflecting a localised version of new ways of working, living and surviving a global pandemic. We hope this book and these stories will inspire you and help bring about change.
